Color name finder
Give this page a colour — type a hex value, pick one with the picker, or enter a name such as “teal” or “brick” — and it tells you what that colour is called. For a colour you already have the closest name on this page, plus how far that name is from the colour you gave, so you can tell a real match from a near miss.

Matched to #008080 at a perceptual distance of 0.0427 in OKLab. Under 0.015 is a match nobody would argue with; above about 0.05 this colour is really its own thing.

Names come from a curated list — the CSS named colours plus names designers actually use. A list of thirty thousand names would name almost anything, which is not the same as naming it correctly. Distances are measured in OKLab, a perceptual colour space, so a value of 0.03 means roughly the same thing for a red as it does for a blue.
How close is close?
Colour names are approximations by nature. There is no authority that decides where “teal” stops and “cyan” starts, and different lists disagree. So instead of pretending the answer is exact, this tool gives you a number.
- Under 0.015 — the same colour. Nobody would argue with the name.
- 0.015 to 0.05 — clearly the same family, but a designer looking closely would notice the difference.
- Above 0.05 — this colour is its own thing. The name is the nearest neighbour, not a description.
The distances above are in OKLab, a perceptual space. That matters: a distance of 0.03 in OKLab means roughly the same thing for a red as it does for a blue, which is not true of distance in RGB.
Why the name list is short on purpose
Some tools match your colour against thirty thousand names scraped from paint catalogues and community lists. That sounds more useful than it is: with that many names, almost any colour gets a confident-sounding answer, and you end up naming a mid-brown “Swamp Mud” when what you actually have is brown. Here the list is the CSS named colours plus a curated set of names that designers genuinely use, so an approximate match is reported as approximate.
A name is the right answer for a conversation and the wrong one for a stylesheet. For what each numeric format actually encodes — and which to use for design systems, gradients and print — see HEX, RGB, HSL and OKLCH explained .
If you need the hex code of a colour that is inside an image rather than in a text field, use the image color picker — it names the pixel you click, using the same matching logic.
Every name on this page
This is the list of colour names on this page — 208 names, each with its hex
value. Browse it directly: pick a name to load that colour and see how close the name
actually is to it. Two hex values carry two names each, because CSS gives them both: cyan
and aqua are the same #00FFFF, and magenta and fuchsia the same #FF00FF. The tool answers with the first and still lists the other as a near
name, because both spellings are correct and neither is the wrong one.

How the match is chosen
The mechanics are simple enough to check by hand. The list — the CSS named colours plus the curated additions — is converted once into OKLab, the perceptual space the distance is measured in. When you type a value, it is converted too, and the tool walks the whole list, keeping whichever name sits closest to your colour.
Two things come back: the name, and the distance it sits at. When that distance is under the tool's near-identical threshold the match is stated plainly; when it is not, the tool says so rather than dressing a neighbour up as an answer. That is also why two very similar hex values can carry the same name with different distances — the name is the same, the confidence is not.
Where to go next
A name starts a conversation; the tools finish it. Paste the hex into the color converter to read its OKLCH and every other format, or into the harmony generator to build the set a single colour implies. If the colour you named is set against text or a background, the contrast checker says whether it clears WCAG AA and AAA; if the colour came from a picture, palette from image keeps the swatch beside the image it came from and adds it to a working palette that every PaletteViva tool reads.
